Scrumping

We collected apples

in old detergent boxes;

on wasteground

behind the blind school

they grew unclaimed

near the blackberry throngs;

the ones we could reach

and the windfall ones

went into boxes

we loaded full into the boot;

and the car grew soft with the scent

of apples, from there to here.
